La présente liste de mosquées de France n'est pas exhaustive. Il est notamment délicat de comptabiliser le nombre précis de lieux de culte musulmans, car nombre d'entre eux sont dans des espaces non construits originellement à cet effet. Une mosquée est avant tout un bâtiment pensé pour la prière et les activités annexes des communautés concernées, sinon il s'agit de simples salles de prières, mais qui sont parfois appelées mosquées dans une logique de simplification.
Le ministère de l'intérieur dénombre, en 2014, 2 368 lieux de cultes musulmans dont 2 052 en France métropolitaine. En 2015, un autre décompte faisait état d'environ 2200 lieux de culte musulman en France[1]. En 2022, il y en aurait plus de 2600, mais ce chiffre est à prendre avec précaution[2].
La plus grande mosquée de France pour la superficie totale est la Grande Mosquée de Strasbourg[3]. Elle s'étend sur un terrain de 10 187 m2 avec une surface construite estimée à 2 731 m2.
La plus grande mosquée de France au regard de la surface construite est la mosquée d'Évry-Courcouronnes[4] avec une surface construite de 5 525 m2 sur un terrain de 7 000 m2.
La plus ancienne est probablement la mosquée de Tsingoni, achevée en 1538 à Mayotte (l'île ne devenant française qu'en 1841). Citons enfin la légende selon laquelle une mosquée ait été construite à Buzancy sur ordre de Saladin[5].
