O Hospital Abente y Lago é un centro hospitalario público situado no centro da Coruña, pertencente ao Complexo Hospitalario Universitario A Coruña. Anteriormente funcionou como hospital militar. Recibiu o seu nome por Ezequiel Abente y Lago, que foi o seu director durante a repatriación dos soldados procedentes da guerra de Cuba.[1]

Historia

En 1626 construíuse nos terreos do actual hospital, coñecidos como Campo do Espírito Santo, o Hospital do Rei. Estaba rodeado polo Hospital do Bo Suceso, que atendía aos militares, pola capela do Espírito Santo e a polvoreira.[1] En 1658 estoupouse esta última, provocando graves danos nos edificios próximos, incluído o Hospital Real, que tivo que ser restaurado antes de volver funcionar a finais do século.[2]

En 1725 o enxeñeiro Francisco Montaigú deseñou a ampliación do Hospital do Rei, incorporando a capela do Espírito Santo.[1]

En 1798 o Capitán Xeneral Pedro Martín Cermeño propuxo que se derrubasen os dous hospitais para construír un hospital único no lugar.[1] Porén, este proxecto non se levou a cabo ata o período entre 1861 e 1866, creando o chamado Hospital Militar do Bo Suceso. O autor do proxecto foi o enxeñeiro Joaquín Montenegro.[1]

O hospital sufriu o 13 de febreiro de 1946 un incendio provocado por un curtocircuíto[2] que arrasou o seu interior, polo que tivo que ser remodelado e modernizado.[1]

O Ministerio de Defensa pechouno en 1995, incorporándose ao Servizo Galego de Saúde o 28 de maio de 1996.[2] Recibiu o nome de Hospital Abente y Lago en 1998,[1] cando comezou a atender pacientes,[3] e a inauguración tivo lugar o 19 de abril de 2001.[4]
