Dikembe Mutombo Mpolondo Mukamba Jean-Jacques Wamutombo (ur. 25 czerwca 1966 w Kinszasie, zm. 30 września 2024 w Atlancie[1]) – kongijski koszykarz, członek Koszykarskiej Galerii Sław. Czterokrotnie wybierany najlepszym obrońcą sezonu w NBA (1995, 1997, 1998, 2001). Ośmiokrotny uczestnik meczu gwiazd NBA.

Życiorys

Wywodził się z plemienia Luba. Karierę koszykarską rozpoczynał podczas studiów medycznych na Uniwersytecie Georgetown. W drużynie Hoyas występował u boku Alonzo Mourninga, późniejszego rywala z parkietów NBA.

Do National Basketball Association trafił ostatecznie w 1991 roku, kiedy to został wybrany w drafcie z 4. numerem przez Denver Nuggets[2]. Spędził tam pięć kolejnych sezonów. W sezonie debiutanckim 1991/1992 zajął drugie miejsce w głosowaniu na debiutanta roku NBA[3]. W ciągu dalszej kariery występował jeszcze w Atlanta Hawks, Philadelphia 76ers, New Jersey Nets, New York Knicks i Houston Rockets.

Jako pierwszy gracz w historii NBA został czterokrotnie uznany za najlepszego obrońcę sezonu.

W sezonie 1998/1999 zajął drugie miejsce w głosowaniu na obrońcę roku NBA[4].

W 2001 roku, pierwszy i ostatni raz w karierze, wystąpił w finałach NBA, będąc wówczas zawodnikiem Philadelphia 76ers.

W trakcie sezonu 2006/2007 blokując rzut Andrew Bynuma, przesunął się na 2. miejsce pod względem liczby zablokowanych rzutów w karierze w sezonie regularnym w historii NBA, wyprzedzając Kareema Abdul-Jabbara[5].

Mutombo zakończył karierę koszykarską w 2009 roku po tym, jak doznał ciężkiej kontuzji kolana w drugim meczu pierwszej rundy play-off przeciwko Portland Trail Blazers. Nie był w stanie sam opuścić boiska i zniesiono go na noszach. Po odejściu Kevina Willisa, od 2007 roku był najstarszym graczem ligi[6].

Zmarł 30 września 2024 roku z powodu guza mózgu[7][1].
