Luis Walter Alvarez, ka Luis Alvarez, (13. juuni 1911 San Francisco, California – 1. september 1988 Berkeley, California) oli Ameerika Ühendriikide füüsik, Nobeli füüsikaauhinna laureaat (1968).

Ta oli alates 1945. aastast California Ülikooli Berkeleys professor. Ta on teinud uurimusi raadiolokatsiooni, kiirendite teooria, kosmilise kiirguse, optika ja osakestefüüsika alalt. 1937. aastal avastas ta elektronihaarde. Aastatel 1944–1945 võttis ta osa Manhattani projektist. 1950. aastatel täiustas ta mullikambrit. Nobeli auhinna sai ta "panuse eest elementaarosakeste füüsikasse, sealhulgas suure hulga resonantside avastamise eest, mis sai võimalikuks mullikambri tehnika arendamisega ja andmete analüüsi kasutuselevõtuga"[1].

Haridus- ja töökäik

Ta lõpetas 1934. aastal Chicago Ülikooli füüsika erialal bakalaureusekraadiga, kaitses samas 1934. aastal magistri- ja 1936. aastal doktoriväitekirja füüsikas.[2]

1936. aastal asus ta tööle California Ülikooli Berkeleys. 1945. aastast professor. Ühtlasi oli ta aastatel 1954–1959 ja 1976–1978 Lawrence'i Berkeley kiirguslabori asedirektor. Aastatel 1969–1970 oli ta Ameerika Füüsika Seltsi president.

Chephreni püramiid

1965. aastal juhtis ta ekspeditsiooni Egiptuses, mille käigus üritas tema meeskond välja selgitada kasutades müüontomograafia tehnikat kosmilise kiirguse abil salakambrite asukohti Chephreni püramiidis Gizas. Paraku ei leitud.

Alvareze hüpotees

1980. aastal ilmus Luis Alvaraze ja Walter Alvareze ning kahe Lawrence'i Berkeley kiirguslabori tuumakeemiku ühisartikkel Science'is "Extraterrestrial Cause for the Cretaceous-Tertiary Extinction: Experiment and Theory", milles esitati uurimustulemuste tõlgendusena väide, et dinosauruste ja paljude teiste liikide massilise väljasuremise Kriidi ajastu lõpul põhjustas kokkupõrge suure meteoroidiga. Seda nende tõlgendust hakati hiljem nimetama Alvareze hüpoteesiks.

Tunnustus

1985. aastal avastatud väikeplaneet Alvarez sai 1988. aastal nime Luis Alvareze ja Walter Alvareze järgi.

Isiklikku

Tema isa oli Minnesota Ülikooli meditsiiniprofessor Walter Clement Alvarez, poeg Walter Alvarez on California Ülikooli Berkeleys professor.
