La lista dei 500 migliori album secondo Rolling Stone è un elenco pubblicato dalla rivista specializzata statunitense Rolling Stone dal 2003 e aggiornato senza periodicità fissa.

Prima versione

L'elenco è stato determinato attraverso la votazione effettuata da un'apposita giuria composta da 273 musicisti, critici, storici e persone dell'industria musicale, tra cui Beck, The Edge, Jackson Browne, Art Garfunkel, Missy Elliott e membri dei Red Hot Chili Peppers, Metallica, Linkin Park e Doors. Ciascun giurato poteva esprimere 50 preferenze. I risultati vennero calcolati con un sistema di punti ideato dalla Ernst & Young tra 1 600 titoli votati in totale.[1]

I musicisti più rappresentati sono stati i Beatles (11 album), Bob Dylan (10), i Rolling Stones (10), Bruce Springsteen (8), gli Who (7), Elton John (6), David Bowie (6), i Radiohead (5), gli U2 (5), Bob Marley (5) i Led Zeppelin (5) e i Pink Floyd (4).

Nel 2012 Rolling Stone ha apportato vari cambiamenti alla lista, aggiornandola con dischi più recenti. Tra le modifiche si notano l'inclusione di tre album di Kanye West e dei dischi più recenti dei Radiohead, di Bruce Springsteen e Bob Dylan.

Sono stati rimossi in tutto 30 album e altrettanti sono stati aggiunti.

Tra le nuove entrate si segnalano gli Arcade Fire e gli Arctic Monkeys; tra i dischi esclusi, invece, la compilation ChangesOneBowie di David Bowie e Music di Madonna. L'album più vecchio tra quelli nella lista è The Anthology of American Folk Music, del 1952. Tre sono gli artisti con più album a testa: Beatles, Rolling Stones e Bob Dylan, con 10 titoli in classifica.

Nell'elenco figurano 40 album pubblicati dal 2000 al 2012, mentre quelli degli anni 1970 sono arrivati, con le nuove aggiunte, a un totale di 187.

Terza versione

Il 22 settembre 2020 la rivista ha cambiato radicalmente la lista, focalizzandosi su artisti più moderni con 154 aggiunte, 86 delle quali del XXI secolo.[2]

L'album Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band (in precedenza sempre alla prima posizione) indietreggia al 24º posto.[2] Inoltre sono stati esclusi tutti i dischi di Frank Zappa.

Parte degli opinionisti ha evidenziato come la revisione della lista rifletta valutazioni basate sull'impatto sociale delle canzoni oltre che sul loro valore musicale intrinseco,[2] nonché sulla diffusione di nuove piattaforme quali Soundcloud e Spotify,[2] ma non sono mancate le critiche di chi ritiene che la graduatoria favorisca ancora troppo la musica rock e la musica di epoche passate, seppur in misura minore rispetto alle precedenti versioni della classifica.[3] Altre critiche hanno rimarcato come, con questa terza revisione, la musica in senso stretto sia passata in secondo piano,[4] lasciando spazio alla denuncia sociale in un'ottica di rivalutazione storica della black music e, più in generale, della black nation statunitense, nell'epoca dell'ascesa del movimento Black Lives Matter.[5][6]
