הרולד א. ורמוס (באנגלית: Harold Eliot Varmus‏; ‏נולד ב־18 בדצמבר 1939) הוא ביולוג יהודי-אמריקאי, שזכה בפרס נובל לפיזיולוגיה או לרפואה לשנת 1989 (יחד עם ג'. מייקל בישופ) על כך שהראו כי אונקוגנים ברטרו-וירוס הם פרוטו-אונקוגנים מותמרים, ומצויים באדם וביצורים רבים נוספים.

קורות חיים

ורמוס נולד בניו יורק, ארצות הברית ב-1939 להוריו היהודים, ביאטריס ופרנק ורמוס. קיבל תואר ראשון בספרות אנגלית מאוניברסיטת הרווארד, קיבל תואר שני באוניברסיטת קולומביה בתחום הרפואה ודוקטורט באוניברסיטת קליפורניה בסן פרנסיסקו.

בשנת 1985 זכה ורמוס בפרס נובל לפיזיולוגיה או לרפואה (יחד עם ג'. מייקל בישופ) על כך שהראו כי אונקוגנים ברטרו-וירוס הם פרוטו-אונקוגנים מותמרים, ומצויים באדם וביצורים רבים נוספים.

ורמוס עזר להוציא לאור את כתב העת הראשון בקבוצת PLoS ב-13 באוקטובר 2003. זהו מיזם תוכן חופשי העוסק בהוצאה לאור של מספר כתבי עת מדעיים בביולוגיה וברפואה.[1][2]

כיהן בתפקידי מנהל בכירים במערכת המחקר הרפואי בארצות הברית. ב-1993 מינה אותו ביל קלינטון לראש המכונים הלאומיים לבריאות, תפקיד שבו כיהן עד 1999, וב-2008 מינה אותו ברק אובמה לכהן כמנהל ה-14 של המכון הלאומי לסרטן, תפקיד שמילא עד התפטרותו ב-2015.

בשנת 1969 נשא לאישה את העיתונאית קונסטנס לואיז קייסי. לזוג שני בנים. על שמו של ורמוס נקרא רחוב בראשון לציון.
