De 1e editie van het Amerikaanse grandslamtoernooi, het US tenniskampioenschap 1881, werd gehouden tussen 31 augustus en 3 september gespeeld op de Newport Casino in Newport.[2] [3]
Het toernooi was alleen toegankelijk voor leden van de Amerikaanse tennisbond. Het toernooi is na Wimbledon het oudste grandslamtoernooi.
Mannenenkelspel Finale: Richard Sears (VS) won van William Glyn (VS) met 6-0, 6-3, 6-2 [4]
Mannendubbelspel Finale: Clarence Clark (VS) en Frederick Taylor (VS) wonnen van Alexander Van Rensselaer (VS) en Arthur E. Newbold (VS) met 6-5, 6-4, 6-5 [5]
Het vrouwenenkelspel werd voor het eerst in 1887 gespeeld, het vrouwendubbelspel in 1889 en het gemengd dubbelspel in 1892.
Een toernooi voor junioren werd voor het eerst in 1973 gespeeld.
