Formicariidae (mierlijsters) is een familie van vogels uit de orde van de zangvogels (Passeriformes). De naam is te danken aan het menu dat bestaat uit trekmieren.

Kenmerken

Hun verenkleed is meestal zwart, bruin en grijs. De snavel is tamelijk kort en puntig.

Leefwijze

Deze vogels volgen trekmieren. Deze mieren jagen de insecten en gewervelden op, die dan door de vogels worden gegrepen. De lichaamslengte bedraagt 8 tot 36 cm.

Voortplanting

Mierlijsters blijven als paartje voor hun hele leven bij elkaar. Ze bouwen samen een komvormig nest, waarin 2 eieren worden gelegd. Beide ouders zorgen samen voor de jongen.

Verspreiding en leefgebied

Ze leven in Midden- en Zuid-Amerika en de meeste soorten komen voor in het Amazone-gebied. Ze leven in dichte laagland- en bergwouden, struwelen en op savannes.

Taxonomie

Deze familie hoort tot de clade Furnarii van de suboscine zangvogels.[1] De familie telt twaalf soorten in twee geslachten:[2]
