מחצבות הגופרית בבארי הן מחצבות גופרית נטושות הנמצאות כשלושה קילומטרים מערבית[1] למקום שבו נמצא כיום קיבוץ בארי, ליד שמורת בתרונות בארי. המחצבות הופעלו בזמן המנדט הבריטי על ידי "החברה הארץ-ישראלית למחצבות גופרית בע"מ". המחצבות פעלו מ-1933 עד 1943 והופקו מהם קרוב ל-8,800 טונות גופרית.

אדמות המחצבות נקנו בשנת 1944 על ידי חברת תנובה אקספורט, ועליהן הוקם קיבוץ בארי. לאחר הקמת מדינת ישראל בדקה ממשלת ישראל את כדאיות הפקת הגופרית, הוחלט שההפקה אינה כדאית, והמחצבות ננטשו.

ההפקה המסחרית

במהלך חודשי ההכנות לכיבוש עזה על ידי הצבא הבריטי בנובמבר 1917 (לאחר שני ניסיונות כושלים), סייר ליאונרד לויד וויליאמס, גאולוג, מהנדס מכרות וקצין מודיעין בריטי, באזור בתרונות בארי (נחביר) בעקבות ריח גופרית שעלה מהאדמה. בסיוע בדואים מקומיים, איתר מרבצי גופרית. עם תום המלחמה, חזר ויליאמס לארץ ובסוף שנת 1929 סיים לערוך סקרים גאולוגיים בשטחים שחכר מחמולת אבו מועליק. לאחר שמצא כי באדמה ישנם מרבצים בעלי ריכוז גבוה של גופרית, השיג זיכיון הפקה מממשל המנדט בשטח של מאות דונמים ל-26 שנה (עד 1966). ויליאמס הקים בשנת 1930 את "החברה הארץ-ישראלית למחצבות גופרית בע"מ" (חברת Palestine Sulphur Quarries Ltd) בהון של 37,500 לא"י. 55% מהמניות נמכרו לבריטים ו-45% לערבים – רובם מעזה. בשנת 1930 הוחל בבניית המבנים ובפתיחת המחצבות. המכונות והציוד הובאו מבריטניה. הפועלים היו מעזה ובדואים מהסביבה והפקת הגופרית בוצעה בדרך פרימיטיבית. התנאים הירודים גרמו לכך שהערבים המקומיים סירבו לעבוד בהפקה והחברה נאלצה להביא בדואים מסיני ואחר כך חורנים מהגולן לבצע את עבודות הכרייה.

סך הכל הופקו מהמחצבות 8,800 טונות. הגופרית נמכרה מקצתה בארץ לשימוש חקלאי, וברובה למצרים, לטורקיה, לסוריה וליוון.[2] בשנת 1938 פסקה הכרייה לזמן קצר מסיבות כלכליות, וחודשה במסגרת מצומצמת במלחמת העולם השנייה, בין השנים 1941–1943. המחצבות נסגרו סופית ב-1946.

תהליך ההפקה

הכרייה נערכה עד לעומק של 10 מטרים. בעומק זה נמצא ריכוז של כ-20% גופרית. בעומק רב יותר ריכוז הגופרית ירד מאוד ולא הייתה כדאיות בכרייה לעומק. בין פירי הכרייה עברו קרונות קלים על גבי מסילה, והעבירו את העפרה למבנה בית החרושת בו היה כבשן הייצור. שרידי בית החרושת והמסילה עדיין נמצאים בשטח.

סיום הכרייה

עם הזמן תפס ה-TNT את מקום הגופרית בייצור אבק שרפה, ולגופרית נותר שימוש רק בחקלאות. המחצבות נעזבו וליאונרד ויליאמס עבר לעבוד באזור אילת. אדמות המחצבות נקנו בשנת 1944 על ידי חברת תנובה אקספורט והיא העמידה אותן לרשות קרן קיימת לישראל. על אדמות אלה הוקם קיבוץ בארי, שהיה אחד מאחת עשרה הנקודות שהוקמו במוצאי יום הכיפורים ה'תש"ז.

האומדן המשוער של כמות הגופרית היה בתחילה מיליון טון. אומדן זה הופחת מאוחר יותר ל-200,000 טון.[3] אומדן ישראלי הפחית את הכמות ל-100,000 טון. לאחר הקמת מדינת ישראל, בדקה ממשלת ישראל את כדאיות הפקת הגופרית. לאחר בדיקות אחדות הוחלט שההפקה אינה כדאית, והמחצבות ננטשו.

היווצרות הגופרית

במהלך השנים הועלו מספר השערות על נסיבות היווצרות הגופרית בבארי.

בשנת 1930 הניחו כי המוצא הוא געשי אולם ריכוז הגופרית והשכבות בהן היא נמצאת אינו תואם מקור כזה. ויליאמס טען כי הגופרית עלתה מותכת מעומק האדמה אך קידוחי נפט שנערכו באזור לא תמכו בהשערה זו.

הועלתה גם השערה על מעיינות עשירים בגז גופריתי העולים ומתרכבים למינרל, אך היא לא נתמכה בממצאים. התגלה רק ריכוז קטן של גז כזה.

ההשערה המקובלת כיום היא שבתקופות קדומות נסתם מפעם לפעם קניון באר שבע-עזה ונוצרו לגונות, בהן נוצרה הגופרית ממקור של סולפט ימי, כפי שרואים גם ביחס האיזוטופים של הגופרית והימצאות הגופרית על פני השטח. ואולם כדי שהגופרית תישאר יציבה היא צריכה להתרכב עם ברזל או חומר אורגני, מחוזרת על ידי פטריות אורגניות או לבוא במגע עם גז מתאן, אחרת היא נעלמת. לחלק מתהליכים אלה נמצאה תמיכה. תרכובות עם מתאן ומימן סולפידי ממעמקי האדמה וחימצון על פני האדמה. המבנה הטקטוני בשטח מצביע על תהליכים של הרמה שחסמה את המערכת, ירידת גוש בארי, עליית גוש בארי, ושוב ירידה ועלייה. פעילויות טקטוניות אילו בצירוף הגורמים לעיל, יצרו את הגופרית.
