Deportes olímpicos

Competición de tiro con arco durante os Xogos Olímpicos de 2004 en Atenas. O tiro con arco foi eliminado do programa olímpico despois de 1920, sendo reinstaurado en 1972.

Os deportes olímpicos son disputados nos Xogos Olímpicos de Verán e Inverno. Os Xogos Olímpicos de 2016 contaban con 28 deportes, e no programa dos Xogos Olímpicos de 2020 inclúense cinco deportes adicionais; os Xogos Olímpicos de Inverno de 2014 contaban con sete deportes.[1] O número e os tipos de probas poden variar lixeiramente dunha olimpíada a outra. Cada deporte olímpico está representado por un organismo internacional ou federación internacional.[2] O Comité Olímpico Internacional (COI) estabelece unha xerarquía dos deportes, das disciplinas e das probas.[2] Segundo esta xerarquía, cada deporte olímpico pode subdividirse en múltiples disciplinas, que moi a miúdo son confundidas cos deportes. Exemplos disto son a natación e o wáter-polo, que de feito son disciplinas do deporte acuático (representado pola Federación Internacional de Natación),[3] ou a patinaxe artística sobre xeo e patinaxe de velocidade sobre xeo, que son disciplinas da patinaxe sobre xeo (representada pola Unión Internacional de Patinaxe sobre Xeo).[4]

Os Xogos Olímpicos pasados incluíron deportes que xa non forman parte do programa, como o polo ou o tiro de corda.[5] Coñecidos como "deportes descontinuados", foron eliminados ou ben pola perda de interese ou pola ausencia dunha organización deportiva axeitada.[2]
