Sejak dimulainya musim Formula Satu 2014, para pembalap harus memilih nomor start yang tersedia sebelum memasuki Grand Prix pertama mereka.[1] Pembalap membawa nomor ini sepanjang karir Formula Satu mereka.

FIA juga telah mengeluarkan nomor sementara untuk pembalap yang merupakan pengecualian dari aturan ini misalnya jika seorang pembalap mengundurkan diri dari balapan dan pembalap cadangan menggantikannya, maka mereka menerima nomor yang dialokasikan untuk tim, ini juga berlaku untuk pengemudi yang hanya berlatih bebas. Beberapa contoh angka tersebut adalah 36 (digunakan oleh Antonio Giovinazzi dalam dua balapan), 40 (digunakan oleh Paul di Resta dalam satu balapan), 45 (digunakan oleh André Lotterer dan Nyck de Vries masing-masing dalam satu balapan), 46 (digunakan oleh Will Stevens dalam satu ras), 47 (digunakan oleh Stoffel Vandoorne dalam satu balapan) dan 51 (digunakan oleh Pietro Fittipaldi dalam dua balapan). Nomor 17 digunakan oleh Jules Bianchi pada tahun 2014 sebelum kecelakaannya di Grand Prix Jepang. Setelah kematiannya, nomor tersebut dipensiunkan sebagai tanda penghormatan.[4]
