Carriera

NBA (2014-)

Orlando Magic (2014-2018)

Dopo tre stagioni in NCAA con i Ragin' Cajuns della University of Louisiana at Lafayette (di cui l'ultima chiusa con oltre 19 punti, 6 assist e 6 rimbalzi di media), venne scelto alla 10ª chiamata del Draft NBA 2014 dai Philadelphia 76ers. Nello stesso giorno venne ceduto agli Orlando Magic in cambio di Dario Šarić.[1][2] Molto simile a Rajon Rondo per caratteristiche tecniche e fisiche, come il play ex campione NBA Payton riuscì ad andare in tripla-doppia (due volte in stagione) grazie ad un'ottima abilità nel catturare rimbalzi. Payton concluse la sua stagione da rookie a 8,9 punti di media, 6,5 assist e 4,3 rimbalzi a partita. Nelle altre stagioni andò sempre oltre i 10 punti di media ma la franchigia della Florida non andò mai ai play-off.

Phoenix Suns (2018)

L'8 febbraio 2018 i Magic lo cedettero ai Phoenix Suns in cambio di una seconda scelta.[3]

New Orleans Pelicans (2018-2019)

Il 2 luglio 2018 firma con i New Orleans Pelicans.[4]

New York Knicks (2019-2021)

Il 2 luglio 2019 si accorda per firmare un biennale da 16 milioni con i New York Knicks.[5] La firma avviene il 9 luglio.[6]
