T-28 הוא טנק סובייטי, שפותח בשנות ה-30 המוקדמות על ידי קבוצת מהנדסים ובראשם עמד סמיון גינזבורג. בניית אב-טיפוס הושלמה ב-1931 והיצור החל בסוף שנת 1932. הטנק היה דומה למפרט A6 הבריטי. כיום ידוע שהסובייטים גנבו את תוכניות ה-A6. בדומה ל-A6, הטנק היה כבד יחסית, בעל שריון עבה לתקופתו (30 מילימטר בנקודות המקסימליות) והיו לו 3 צריחים. הצריח המרכזי נשא תותח 76.2 מ"מ, והצריחים הקטנים נשאו מקלעי DT בקוטר 7.62 מילימטר.

מאפיין בולט ואף מהפכני היה ייצוב התותח. המנוע היה חלש מעט לטנק הכבד, אך לא באופן שיקשה על תפעולו. T-28 היה גם אמין למדי. הטנק נכנס לשירות ב-1934 והיה נדמה שמדובר בטנק מוצלח מאוד. במהלך השנים 1933–1940 במפעל קירוב בלנינגרד נבנו 503 טנקים מדגם זה.

למעשה, הטנק הפך למיושן במהרה. בלחימה נגד פינלנד במהלך מלחמת החורף התברר שהטנק אינו עמיד בפני תותחי נ"ט, ושצריחיו המרובים יוצרים "מלכודות" לפגזי האויב ובכך מסכנים את צוות הטנק. בעקבות המלחמה פותח דגם חדש של T-28 בעל שריון משופר, אך רעיון הטנק מרובה הצריחים והאיטי נעלם עם הופעת הפנצרים הגרמניים.

ערב הפלישה הגרמנית לברית המועצות היו בצבא האדום כ-400 טנקי T-28 (אך רק כ-250 מהם במצב שמיש). רוב הטנקים הללו אבדו כבר בחודשיים הראשונים של הלחימה, בעיקר נעזבו במהלך הנסיגה בשל תקלות מכניות. למעשה החל מסתיו 1941 המקום היחיד בו עוד נשארו טנקי T-28 הייתה חזית לנינגרד. הם שרדו את כל תקופת המצור על העיר ואף השתתפו בהסרתו בינואר 1944. הסיבה העיקרית לשרידותם - הימצאותו של מפעל קירוב בעיר ובו מלאי גדול של חלקי חילוף ל-T-28.

דגמים עיקריים של הטנק

  • T-28 דגם שנת 1934 - הדגם הסדרתי הראשון. במהלך השנים 1934 - 1938 יוצרו 307 יחידות.
  • T-28 דגם שנת 1938 - בדגם זה הותקן תותח ארוך הקנה (198 ס"מ לעומת 126 ס"מ בדגם הקודם). על שדרוג הטנק היה אחראי צוות מהנדסי המפעל בראשות ניקולאי דוחוב. 131 יחידות מדגם זה יוצרו בשנים 1938–1940.
  • T-28 דגם שנת 1940 - בדגם זה שונתה צורת הצריח העיקרי. במהלך שנת 1940 יוצרו 13 יחידות מדגם זה.
  • T-28E - בדגם זה הותקנו לוחות שריון נוספים כלקח ממלחמת החורף. כתוצאה מכך השריון הקדמי עובה ל-80 מ"מ ושריון הצד ל-40 מ"מ. במהלך שנת 1940 כ-110 טנקי T-28 מהדגמים הקודמים עברו הסבה לדגם זה.
  • OT-28 - בדגם זה במקום התותח הותקן להביור.
