Η Άνω Βέργα είναι οικισμός της Περιφερειακής Ενότητας Μεσσηνίας, στην Περιφέρεια Πελοποννήσου, με πληθυσμό 27 κατοίκων, σύμφωνα με την Απογραφή του 2021. Διοικητικά ανήκει στην κοινότητα Βέργας και υπάγεται στη Δημοτική Ενότητα Καλαμάτας, του Δήμου Καλαμάτας.[1]

Τοποθεσία

Η Άνω Βέργα βρίσκεται σε υψόμετρο 869 μέτρων[2] στον Ταΰγετο, πάνω από την Καλαμάτα και μέχρι το 1956 ονομαζόταν Άνω Σέλιτσα.

Μάχη Βέργας

Στην περιοχή της Άνω Βέργας[3] και Κάτω Βέργας, έγινε η ιστορική Μάχη της Βέργας, που οι Μανιάτες οχυρωμένοι πίσω από το «Τείχος της Βέργας», νίκησαν τον Ιμπραήμ και η Μάνη παρέμεινε αδούλωτη.[4]

Διοικητικές μεταβολές

  • 16-10-1940, αναγνώριση του οικισμού Άνω Σέλιτσα και προσάρτησή του στην κοινότητα Σελίτσης.
  • 21-05-1956, ο οικισμός Άνω Σέλιτσα μετονομάζεται σε Άνω Βέργα.[5]
  • 04-12-1997, ο οικισμός Άνω Βέργα αποσπάται από την Κοινότητα Βέργας[6] και προσαρτάται στο Δήμο Καλαμάτας.
