Das Département du Finistère [finisˈtɛːʀ] ist das französische Département mit der Ordnungsnummer 29. Es liegt im Nordwesten des Landes in der Region Bretagne und ist das westlichste kontinentale Département Frankreichs. Aufgrund seiner Lage auf der Spitze der bretonischen Halbinsel bekam es bereits in römischer Zeit den Namen Finis Terrae (Ende der Erde). Der bretonische Name lautet Penn ar Bed ([ˌpɛnarˈbeːt] Anfang, Spitze oder auch Haupt der Welt). Das Departement wird in Nord- und Süd-Finistère unterteilt, Präfektursitze sind Quimper im Süden und die Hafenstadt Brest im Norden.

Geographie

Typische Küstenlandschaft bei Le Diben / Morlaix

Das Departement erstreckt sich in etwa von Morlaix über Brest bis Quimperlé. Die Küste des Finistère ist gekennzeichnet durch lange Sandstrände im Süden, Mäander und kleine Buchten im Norden, sowie eine schroffe Felsenküste mit Heidelandschaften dahinter im Westen.

Geschichte

Das Département wurde am 4. März 1790 aus dem westlichsten Teil der Provinz Bretagne gebildet.

Wappen

Beschreibung: Das Wappen ist in Gold und Blau gespalten. Links ist ein schwarzer nach links gewendeter Löwe auf goldenem Grund und rechts ein springendes silbernes Schaf mit goldener Bewehrung auf blauem Grund dargestellt. Das Schildhaupt ist mit fünf Hermelinschwänzchen belegt.
