Ōura Katedrali

Japonya'da Katolik Kilisesi, Roma'daki papanın ruhani liderliği altında dünya çapındaki Katolik Kilisesi'nin Japonya'daki bir parçasıdır. 2021 tarihi itibarıyla Japonya'da 6.200'ü din adamı ve ilahiyat öğrencisi olmak üzere yaklaşık 431.100 Katolik yaşamaktadır[1] ve Japonya'da 957 kiliseye yayılmış 34 piskopos, 1.235 rahip ve 40 diyakoz ile üç metropolit başpiskoposluğu dahil 16 piskoposluk bölgesi bulunmaktadır.[2][3]

Piskoposlukların piskoposları, ulusun piskoposluk konferansı olan Japonya Katolik Piskoposlar Konferansı'nı oluşturur. Japonya'da kullanılan ana ayinsel ayinler Latin Kilisesi'ninkilerdir.

Vatikan'ın diplomatik elçisi ve Japonya'daki yerel kilisenin delegesi olarak görev yapan günümüz apostolik elçisi Başpiskopos Leo Boccardi'dir.[4]

Hristiyanlık, ilk olarak İspanyol Franciscus Xaverius ve İtalyan Alessandro Valignano gibi Cizvitler tarafından Japonya'ya tanıtıldı. Portekiz Katolikleri, kuruluşunda Uzak Doğu'da önemli bir Hristiyan merkezi olarak kabul edilen Nagasaki limanını kurdu, ancak bu ayrım artık geçerliliğini yitirdi. İtalyan bir misyoner olan Federico Barbaro tarafından yapılan tüm İncil'in modern bir Japonca çevirisi bulunmaktadır. Günümüzde birçok Japon Katolik, Brezilya ve Peru'dan gelen Japon kökenli göçmenler ve Japon vatandaşlığına kabul edilmiş Filipinli göçmenlerdir.

Başlangıçta Anglikanların miraslarını korurken Roma ile birliğe girmeleri için bir araç olarak yaratılan Katolik Kilisesi içinde kişisel bir papazlık olan Güney Haçı Meryem Ana'nın Kişisel Ruhaniliği da Japonya'da oluşmaya başladı. 2015 itibarıyla iki cemaati bulunmaktadır.[5]
