Pius I

Pius I ishte ipeshkëv i Romës dhe papë ndoshta nga vitet 140 - 154. Besohet të ketë lindur në Aquileia, në veri të Italisë, babai i tij ishte një farë "Rufinusi", sipas Liber Pontificalis. U zgjodh papë pas tre ditësh agjërimi dhe lutjesh kushtuar besimtarëve të shkollës së re papnore. Papa Piusi I ishte pasardhës i Papa Higinus.

Sipas të dhënave, ai u mor me çështjet rreth hebrenjve të kthyer në krishterim si dhe luftoi ashpër heretikët gnostikë Valentino, Cerdone dhe Marcione. Ai vendosi që Pashkët të festohen gjithmonë në ditën e diel.

Ai ka ndërtuar kishën romake Santa Pudenziana, qe është edhe kisha më e vjetër e Romës.

Sipas Canone muratoriano, një kopje origjinale greke e vitit 170, Piusi ishte vëllai i Hermas, autorit të veprës "Pastori i Hermas", më e përhapura mes etërve apostolikë.

Papa Piusi i I renditet si papë i 10 i kishës katolike romake dhe është shenjtor.

Rrëfehet se vdiq si dëshmor, por rreth kësaj nuk ka të dhëna historike të besueshme.

Dita e tij përkujtimore është 11 korriku.

Emri Pius do të thotë "i mëshirueshmi, i përvuajturi".
