Borgarnes séð yfir Borgarfjarðarbrú.

Borgarnes er bær á samnefndu nesi við Borgarfjörð. Íbúafjöldi er 2.147 (2024)[1] og er bærinn kjarni sveitarfélagsins Borgarbyggðar og þjónustumiðstöð fyrir nágrannasveitirnar auk þess að vera vinsæll áningarstaður ferðafólks. Þótt Borgarnes standi við sjó er þar nær engin útgerð stunduð í dag. Áður fyrr voru þó gerð út skipin Hvítá og Eldborg sem var aflahæst á síld nokkrar vertíðir.

Bærinn var upphaflega í Borgarhreppi en varð að sérstökum hreppi, Borgarneshreppi, árið 1913. Hinn 24. október 1987 varð hreppurinn formlega að bæjarfélagi undir heitinu Borgarnesbær.

11. júní 1994 sameinaðist Borgarnesbær Hraunhreppi, Norðurárdalshreppi og Stafholtstungnahreppi undir nafninu Borgarbyggð.
