Helluntaiherätys Virossa syntyi 1920-luvulla. Helluntaiherätykseen ja karismaattiseen liikkeeseen kuuluu yhteensä yli 5 000 jäsentä. Helluntai-karismaattisuus lasketaan kokonaisuutena Viron kolmanneksi suurimmaksi protestanttiseksi tunnustuskunnaksi baptismin ja luterilaisuuden jälkeen. Karismaattinen liike kattaa myös baptismin perinteen. Helluntailiikkeen tarkkaa jäsenmäärää on ollut vaikea arvioida, mutta Viron kristillisen helluntaikirkon järjestämä Miracle Crusade keräsi yhteen yli 6 000 ihmistä.[1]

Historia

1870-luvun herätykset

1870-luvun uskonnolliset herätysliikkeet Viron länsirannikolla loivat pohjan Viron helluntailiikkeelle ja karismaattiselle kristillisyydelle. Herätystä syntyi tuolloin erityisesti ruotsinkielisen väestön piirissä, joiden keskuudessa ruotsalaiset toimivat. Tallinnaan ja Koillis-Viroon vaikutti myös Pietarin uskonnollinen aktiivisuus. Pietarissa oli myös huomattava virolainen yhteisö. Narvan lestadiolaispiirien kautta Thomas Ball Barratt vieraili Virossa vuonna 1911.[1]

Helluntaiherätyksen saapuminen Viroon

Helluntaiherätys saapui Viroon 1920-luvulla ruotsalaisten ja suomalaisten lähetyssaarnaajien toimesta.[2] Aluksi helluntaiherätys levisi ruotsalaisväestön ja Viron länsirannikolla vallitsevan herätyksen piirissä. Samanaikaisesti suomalaiset tukivat lähetystyötä Koillis-Virossa.[1]

Helluntaiherätys Neuvostoaikana

Lauttayhteydestä Suomeen tuli tärkeä osa Viron helluntailiikettä. Samaan aikaan karismaattinen herätys syttyi Tallinnan evankelisissa ja baptistisissa kirkoissa. 1970-luvulla Virossa syntyi myös parantamisherätystä, jolla oli suuri vaikutus Neuvostoliiton karismaattiseen liikkeeseen. Ulkomaisten yhteyksien merkitys on korostunut Virossa 1980-luvun lopulta lähtien.[2]

Neuvostoliiton loppuaikoina Latvian ja Venäjän helluntailaiset järjestivät suuren evankeliointitapahtuman Tallinnassa. 24. heinäkuuta 1988 Tallinnan konserttitalon tapahtumaan osallistui lähes 7 000 ihmistä. Vuonna 1989 perustettiin Viron helluntaikirkko. Maa itsenäistyi uudelleen pari vuotta myöhemmin. Yleinen vapautuminen johti uusien karismaattisten ja helluntailaisten kirkkojen kasvuun Virossa.[2]
