Wedi'r rhyfel rhwng y duwiau a'r Titaniaid, rhannodd y tri brawd y ddaear rhyngddynt; yr awyr i Zews, y môr i Poseidon a'r isfyd i Hades. Roedd yn brif dduw nifer o ddinasoedd Groegaidd, yn cynnwys Corinth, er iddo golli cystadleuaeth ag Athena i benderfynu pwy fyddai prif dduw Athen.
