Cylchgrawn cyffredinol, Cymraeg ei iaith, a oedd yn cyhoeddi erthyglau crefyddol, gwleidyddol a hanesyddol, ynghyd â barddoniaeth, bywgraffiadau a newyddion. Mae hefyd yn nodweddiadol am erthyglau ar gaethwasiaeth a'r Chwyldro Ffrengig. Yn wreiddiol yn gylchgrawn chwarterol daeth yn un daufisol yn 1794. Golygwyd y cylchgrawn gan y gweinidog ac awdur, Morgan John Rhys (Morgan ab Ioan Rhus, 1760-1804) gyda'r bardd a llenor, David Thomas, (Dafydd Ddu Eryri, 1759-1822) yn gyfrannwr amlwg.

Gweinidog gyda'r Bedyddwyr oedd Morgan John Rhys, neu Rhees (8 Rhagfyr 1760 – 7 Rhagfyr 1804). Roedd hefyd yn bropagandydd enwog dros ryddid, gan groesawu'r Chwyldro Ffrengig, ac yr oedd yn pregethu yn erbyn caethwasiaeth. Cafodd ei eni yn Llanbradach, Caerffili.

Yn 1794 ymfudodd i America wedi cael ei siomi gan yr ymateb i radicaliaeth Prydain. Roedd mewn perygl o gael ei arestio am ei feirniadaeth ar y llywodraeth yn ei erthyglau yn Y Cylchgrawn Cynmraeg [sic], y cyfnodolyn a ddechreuodd yn Nhrefeca yn yr un flwyddyn.

Yn America bu'n gyfrifol am brynu tir a sefydlu gwladfa Gymreig yng ngorllewin Pennsylvania. Rhoddodd yr enw 'Cambria' ar y wladfa newydd a'i brif dref oedd Beulah. Cyhoeddodd bapur newydd yno, The Western Sky. Cychwynnodd enwad newydd, Eglwys Crist, a cheisiai genhadu i'r brodorion Americanaidd.

Credai y dylid creu sir newydd ym Mhennsylvania o'r enw Cambria, ac mai ei dref ef, Beula, a ddylai fod yn ganolfan weinyddol i'r sir. Pan grewyd Cambria County gan lywodraeth talaith Pennsylvania yn 1804, collodd Beula y bleidlais i ddod yn brif ganolfan weinyddol o un pleidlais, yn lle hynny, daeth tref gyfagos Ebensburg - a oedd yn wreiddiol yn rhan o Beula - yr anrhydedd honno. Bu farw Rhys bythefnos ar ôl i'r rheithfarn gael ei rhyddhau.[1]
