M40 adalah senapan runduk standar yang digunakan oleh Korps marinir Amerika Serikat (United States Marine Corps/(USMC))[2] berdasarkan senapan Remington 700 yang dimodifikasi oleh USMC 2112 (Divisi persenjataan) di markas USMC Quantico, Triangle, Virginia menggunakan komponen dari berbagai penyalur.[2] Senapan ini dibuat dalam empat varian yaitu M40, M40A1, M40A3, dan M40A5.[3]

M40 pertama kali diperkenalkan pada tahun 1966. Perubahan menjadi seri A1 selesai dilaksanakan pada tahun 1970an, A3 pada tahun 2000an, dan A5 pada tahun 2009.[4] Seri terbaru yaitu M40A5 sedang dalam proses pengembangan, sedangkan seri A1 diupgrade menjadi seri A3. Seri M40A5 dibuat dengan magazen yang dapat dilepas dan laras berulir agar dapat dipasang alat peredam suara.

M40 adalah tipe senapan runduk untuk kalangan militer dan merupakan hasil modifikasi dari Remington 700, senapan ini sejatinya dibuat dengan sistem popor utuh dari kayu (one pice stock).[2], sedangkan popor untuk seri A1 dan A3 menggunakan bahan kaca serat (fiberglass) buatan McMillan, dan dilengkapi bidikan teleskopik tipe baru.[2][5] Berat dari pemicu dari kedua tipe di atas antara 1,3 sampai 2,2 kg.[2]
