Institut Agama Islam Negeri

Institut Agama Islam negeri (IAIN) adalah bentuk perguruan tinggi Islam negeri di Indonesia yang menyelenggarakan pendidikan akademik dalam disiplin ilmu keaagaman Islam. IAIN merupakan salah satu bentuk perguruan tinggi Islam negeri selain universitas Islam negeri (UIN) dan sekolah tinggi agama Islam negeri (STAIN).

Sejarah

Institut Agama Islam Negeri (IAIN) dibentuk oleh pemerintah pada tahun 1960 di kota Yogyakarta dengan nama IAIN Al Jami'ah al-Islamiah al-Hukumiyah, yang merupakan gabungan dari Perguruan Tinggi Agama Islam Negeri (PTAIN) Yogyakarta dan Akademi Dinas Ilmu Agama (ADIA) Jakarta.

Sejak tahun 1963, berdirilah cabang-cabang IAIN yang terpisah dari pusat. Pada tahun 1965, nama IAIN di Yogyakarta diubah menjadi IAIN Sunan Kalijaga.

Pada abad ke-21, sejumlah IAIN berubah nama menjadi universitas Islam Negeri (UIN), karena memiliki fakultas dan jurusan di luar studi keislaman. IAIN Syarif Hidayatullah di Jakarta misalnya, berubah nama menjadi Universitas Islam Negeri Syarif Hidayatullah. Jika pada tahun 2000 tercatat masih terdapat 14 IAIN di Indonesia, saat ini 11 di antaranya telah berubah menjadi UIN.
