Edward Joseph Snowden (lahir 21 Juni 1983)^[1] adalah mantan kontraktor teknik Amerika Serikat dan karyawan Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) yang menjadi kontraktor untuk National Security Agency (NSA) sebelum membocorkan informasi program mata-mata rahasia NSA kepada pers.^[3][4] Snowden membocorkan informasi rahasia seputar program-progam NSA yang sangat rahasia seperti PRISM kepada The Guardian dan The Washington Post pada Juni 2013. Snowden mengatakan bahwa pembocoran PRISM dan perintah FISA terkait dengan aksi pengambilan data oleh NSA bertujuan mengungkapkan apa yang ia yakini sebagai tindakan berlebihan oleh pemerintah untuk memantau aktivitas warga Amerika Serikat. ^{[4][5][6][7][8]}

Skandal Snowden telah menyebabkan hubungan luar negeri Amerika Serikat dengan beberapa negara di Eropa seperti Prancis dan Jerman menjadi terganggu.^[9] Saat ini, Russia memberikan perlindungan suaka kepada Snowden^[10] dengan catatan Snowden tidak akan lagi bergerak untuk "menyakiti" Amerika Serikat.^[11]
