因同名专辑及歌曲在其生涯中颇具代表性，所以比利通常被暱稱为「鋼琴師（英语：en:Piano_Man_(song)）」，自1970年代以來，他以獨奏藝術家的身分在商業上取得了成功，從1971年至1993年發行了12張流行專輯以及在2001年發行了一張古典專輯，[2] 他的唱片銷量排名全球第六名、美國第三名。全球唱片销量累计超过一亿张。[3][4] 他1985年發行的《精選輯 Vol. I & II》，是美國銷量最好的唱片之一。[5]他的歌曲於七十至九十年代都进入过排行榜前十名，六次获得格莱美奖。[6]

早年生活

比利·喬於1949年5月9日在美国布朗克斯區出生[7][8]，童年時生活在紐約希克斯維勒的郊區[9]。比利的父親霍華德·喬是一個古典音樂鋼琴家，是出生於德國的猶太裔人。霍華德後來移居到瑞士，之後來到美國[9]。比利的母親羅莎琳德·尼曼，出生於英國一個猶太家庭。羅莎琳德和霍華德·喬於1957年離婚，霍華德移居到維也納。比利·喬有一個姐姐朱迪思·喬，和一個同父異母的弟弟亞歷山大·喬，是一個古典音樂的指揮家[10]。

在母親的鼓勵下，小時候的比利開始學習鋼琴。他的導師包括著名的美國鋼琴家Morton Estrin[11]及音樂家Timothy Ford。作為一個少年人，比利接受了拳擊訓練，令他可以保護自己[12]。他成功地在「金拳套」業餘比賽中贏了22個回合，於第24個回合他被擊斷鼻樑，不久之後他放棄了這項運動[13]。

學業
