开普勒186（Kepler-186）是一颗M1型主序星，距离地球151 ± 18 秒差距（493 ± 59 光年），位于天鹅座中。这颗恒星的温度略低于太阳，金属量则大约是太阳的一半。目前已知它有五颗行星，包括第一颗地球大小且位于适居带中的行星：开普勒186f。^[5]这颗恒星还有四颗行星，但是开普勒186b、c、d和e距离恒星太近，温度过高而不能存在液态水。四颗内侧的行星可能是潮汐锁定（同步自转）的，但是开普勒186f距恒星足够远，因此恒星引力作用较弱，可能没有足够的时间使它的自转减慢。

行星形成过程模拟也表明开普勒186e和开普勒186f之间可能存在另一颗非凌日的低质量行星。如果这颗行星确实存在，它的质量不可能比地球大很多，否则会导致轨道不稳定。^[6]
