Ernesto Cesàro (12 Mart 1859, Napoli - 12 Eylül 1906), diferansiyel geometri alanında çalışan bir İtalyan matematikçiydi. Bu konuyla ilgili olarak Lezioni di geometria intrinseca (Napoli, 1890) adlı bir kitap yazdı ve burada fraktalleri ve kısmen de Rham eğrileri'nin daha büyük sınıfı tarafından kapsanan ancak bugün hala onun onuruna Cesàro eğrileri olarak bilinen boşluk doldurma eğrilerini tanıttı.[1] Ayrıca ıraksak serilerin 'Cesàro-toplamı' için Cesàro ortalaması olarak bilinen 'ortalama alma' yöntemiyle de tanınır.

Hayatı

Akademik kariyerine oldukça hayal kırıklığı yaratan bir başlangıç yaptıktan ve en önemli durak olan ağabeyinin yerel üniversitede mineraloji öğrettiği Liège'deki Avrupa yolculuğundan sonra Ernesto Cesàro, 1887'de Roma Üniversitesi'nden mezun oldu. Zaten yayınlamış olduğu çok sayıda eser ile Belçika Kraliyet Bilim Derneği'nin bir parçasıydı.

Ertesi yıl, Palermo Üniversitesi'nde matematik kürsüsünü aldı ve 1891 yılına kadar sürdürdü. Roma'ya yerleşti ve burada Sapienza Üniversitesi'nde profesör olarak kaldı. En küçük oğlu Manlio'yu boğulmaktan kurtarmaya çalışırken kaza sonucu öldü.

Çalışmaları

Cesàro'nun ana katkıları diferansiyel geometri alanındadır. 1894'te yazılan Lessons of intrinsic geometry (Gerçek geometri dersleri, özellikle bir fraktal eğrinin inşasını açıklar. Bundan sonra Cesàro, Koch'un sürekli fakat tüm noktalarında türevlenemeyen "kar tanesi eğrisini" de inceledi.

Diğer eserleri arasında 'Introduction to the mathematical theory of infinitesimal calculus (Sonsuz küçük hesabın matematiksel teorisine giriş) (1893), Algebraic analysis (Cebirsel analiz) (1894), Elements of infinitesimal calculus (Sonsuz küçük hesabın unsurları) (1897) bulunmaktadır. Dizi kısmi terimlerinin toplamının ortalama limiti tarafından verilen, bugün "Cesàro toplamı" olarak bilinen bir ıraksak dizinin olası bir tanımını önerdi.
