A segmented animal is seen from the side. It has a long antennae and small black eyes; one pair of legs is much more robust than the others; the body is slightly arched and each segment carries a pair of appendages. The whole animal is translucent or a pale brown colour.

Ang Subphylum Crustacea (tinatawag ang mga kasapi nito na crustacean [Ingles] o krustaseo [Espanyol: crustaseo]) ay bumubuo ng isang napakalaking pangkat ng mga artropod, na kinabibilangan ng hayop na alimango, alimasag, talangka, dakumo, katang, ulang, hipon (Caridea), kril at mga barnakulo (taliptip). Ang 67,000 nailarawan nang mga espesye ay sumasaklaw sa sukat na magmula sa katulad ng Stygotantulus stocki (0.1 mm o 0.004 pulgada), magpahanggang sa gagambang alimango ng Hapon na may haba ng binti na umaabot sa 12.5 talampakan (3.8 m) at mayroong timbang na 44 lb (20 kg). Katulad ng iba pang mga artropod, ang mga krustasyano ay mayroong isang eksoskeleton, na nalulugon (ecdysis o moulting) ng mga krustasyano upang sila ay lumaki.
