Slon pralesný[2][3] alebo (menej vhodne) slon lesný[4][5][6][7] (lat. Loxodonta cyclotis) je druh slona z rodu Loxodonta. Do roku 2001/2010/2017 sa klasifikoval ako poddruh slona afrického nazývaný slon africký pralesný (iný názov: slon pralesný[3]; lat. Loxodonta africana cyclotis) alebo ako pralesová (alebo pralesná) forma slona afrického[8].

Slon pralesný dnes zahŕňa aj to, čo sa donedávna u niektorých autorov chápalo ako samostatný druh (či poddruh) slon zakrpatený (Loxodonta pumilio, Loxodonta africanus pumilio) - pozri aj komentár v článku Loxodonta.

Podľa Medzinárodnej únie na ochranu prírody a prírodných zdrojov slon pralesný patrí medzi kriticky ohrozené druhy, trend celkovej populácie je klesajúci, stavy v rokoch 2002 – 2011 poklesli o 62% a 72% populácie žije v Gabone a v Konžskej demokratickej republike.[1]

Charakteristika

Slon pralesný má podobne ako slon ázijský štyri nechty na zadných nohách a päť nechtov na predných nohách. Je menší než slon africký, má tmavšiu kožu, okrúhlejšie uši, ktoré sa môžu nad lopatkami dotýkať a má srstnatejší chobot. Žlté alebo hnedasté kly sú rovnejšie, idú súbežne vedľa seba a sú nasmerované nadol, čo umožňuje týmto obyvateľom afrických pralesov voľne prechádzať cez hustú vegetáciu.
