Platin

The platins are a type of drug used in chemotherapy. They are also called platinum-based antineoplastics. The first platin to be discovered was cisplatin, PtCl2(NH3)2. Other platins are derivatives of cisplatin that replace one or both pairs of ligands. Some also change the oxidation state of the platinum atom.

Platins work by stopping DNA replication in targeted cells.

Examples of platins

Drug Anionic ligand Neutral ligand Structure
Cisplatin 2 Cl 2 NH3
Carboplatin C4H6(COO)2−2 2 NH3
Oxaliplatin C2O2−4 C6H10(NH2)2
