Carboplatin

Carboplatin is a drug used in chemotherapy. It is one of a group of related drugs called platins, which have a central platinum atom surrounded by four or six ligands. Carboplatin was invented to be a less toxic alternative to cisplatin.[1]

Structure

Like all platins, carboplatin is a platinum coordination complex. Instead of the two chloride ions that are ligands in cisplatin, carboplatin has one 1,1-cyclobutane dicarboxylate (CBDCA) ligand connected to the atom at two different places. This ligand is harder to separate from the platinum atom than the chlorine atoms in cisplatin.[2]

Preparation

Carboplatin can be made from cisplatin or its chemical precursor, cis-diamminodiiodoplatinum, and a salt of 1,1-cyclobutane dicarboxylate.[source?]
