Magnezijum sulfid (MgS) je hemijsko jedinjenje koje sadrži jedan atom magnezijuma i jedan atom sumpora. On je u čvrstom agregatnom stanju, kristal crvenkasto-bele boje.

Priprema i opšte osobine

MgS se formira reakcijom sumpora ili vodonik sulfida sa magnezijumom. On se kristalizuje u strukturu kamene soli, mada je moguća i struktura slična sfaleritu.[4] Hemijske osobine MgS su slične osobinama srodnih jonskih sulfida, kao što su sulfidi Na, Ba, Ca. On reaguje sa kiseonikom da formira sulfat, magnezijum sulfat. MgS reaguje sa vodom i proizvodi vodonik sulfid i magnezijum hidroksid.[5]
