Kim Dotcom (født Kim Schmitz[5] 21. januar 1974[6]) er en tysk-finsk dataprogrammerer og forretningsmann som fikk mye oppmerksomhet under «dot com-boblen» og som i ettertid ble dømt for innsidehandel og underslag. Han er også kjent som grunnleggeren av Megaupload og andre nettsteder.[7]

20. januar 2012 ble Dotcom arrestert og varetektsfengslet av newzealandsk politi, etter en sak fra amerikanske myndigheter mot ham, og resten av Megauploads stab. FBI mente selskapet drev med illegal kopiering av opphavsrettsvernet materiale.[8][9] I et intervju med 3 News New Zealand, mente derimot Dotcom at opphavsretthaverne (da innen film- og musikkbransjen), hadde direkte adgang til å fjerne sitt eget materiale fra siden.[10]

Dotcom har deltatt i det internasjonale vei-rallyet Gumball 3000 ved flere anledninger, og vant rallyet i 2001. Han deltok også i 2004.[11]

Tidlig karriere

Som tenåring ble Dotcom kjent i hjemlandet Tyskland for å ha påstått å ha cracket bedriftsmarkedet PBX' systemer i USA, og han prøvde å få seg en karriere innen datasikkerhet.[12] Det førte til arrestasjon og tiltale for bruk og salg av stjålet kredittkort-informasjon.[13][14] I 1994 startet Dotcom et datasikkerhetsselskap som het DataProtect.[15]
