Calum Thomas Hood (født 25. januar 1996) er en australsk musiker, kjent for å være bassist og bakgrunnsvokalist i poprock-bandet 5 Seconds of Summer. Bandet har siden 2014 solgt mer enn 10 millioner album, over 2 millioner konsertbilletter globalt. Bandets sanger er strømmet mer enn 7 milliarder ganger, noe som gjør dem til en av de mest vellykkede australske bandene i historien.[2][3][4][5]

Tidlig liv

Calum Thomas Hood ble født den 25. januar 1996 og vokste opp i Mount Druitt i New South Wales.[6] Hans far, David Hood, er en tidligere ansatt i Coca-Cola, mens hans mor, Joy Hood, jobbet med alderspensjon.[7] Gjennom sin far hevder han skotsk bakgrunn, og gjennom sin mor hevder han maori-bakgrunn. Hood er den yngre broren til sangereren og låtskriveren Mali-Koa. Ifølge Hood var det en oppvekst i middelklassen og «ikke det mest glamorøse liv».[6] Hood gikk på Norwest barneskole hvor han da han gikk i tredje klasse ble venn med den fremtidige bandkameraten Michael Clifford. Han har sin sin videregående utdanning fra Norwest Christian College, hvor han da han gikk i syvende klasse ble venn med den fremtidige bandkameraten Luke Hemmings, etter at de hadde utført en Secondhand Serenade-coverlåt på et skole-talentshow.[6]

Gjennom sin barndom og de tidlige tenårene, fikk Calum en stor interesse for sport, spesielt fotball, som han hadde en «lovende fremtid» i. Han besøkte en brasiliansk treningsleir for å kunne ha sporten som en karrierevei.[8] Men etter dannelsen av 5 Seconds Of Summer, og på grunn av at bandet flyttet til London i slutten av 2012, bestemte han seg for å slutte å spille fotball, og i stedet drive med musikk.[9] Etter å ha sluttet med fotball uttalte Hood; «det var en periode på en måned hvor foreldrene mine trodde jeg tok den verste avgjørelsen i livet mitt. Mamma kastet ut alle klærne i skapet mitt. Og jeg forlot [...] bare å være som, jeg gjorde en av de største beslutningene, men nå har det fungert.»[10] Etter hans beslutning om å slutte med å spille fotball, droppet han ut av videregående skole i 2012 etter å ha fullført 11. klasse.[11][12]

Karriere

I 2011 begynte Hood, Clifford og Hemmings å legge ut coverlåter på Hemmings YouTube-kanal. Ashton Irwin ble senere med i trioens videoer. De fire danner i dag 5 Seconds Of Summer.[13]  Etter måneder med coverlåter sammen, begynte bandet å tiltrekke seg interesse fra store plateselskaper og utgivere og de signerte en publiseringsavtale med Sony / ATV Music Publishing.[14] Hood har senere gitt ut fire studioalbum med bandet, alle møtt med verdensomspennende suksess: 5 Seconds Of Summer (2014), Sounds Good Feels Good (2015), Youngblood (2018) og CALM (2020).[15]

Utenom bandet, har Hood medvirket i låtskriving for andre artister, blant andre Black Veil Brides og Makeout.[16][17]

Personlig liv

I 2017 ble det rapportert at Hood kjøpte et hus, tidligere eid av Richie Kotzen, i Hollywood Hills-nabolaget i Los Angeles.[18] Fra 2020 er Hoods nettoverdi anslått til å være 25 millioner amerikanske dollar.[19]
