Perusahaan swasta

Suatu perusahaan swasta atau perusahaan tertutup adalah sebuah perusahaan bisnis yang dimiliki oleh organisasi non-pemerintah atau sekelompok kecil pemegang saham atau anggota-anggota perusahaan yang tidak menawarkan atau memperdagangkan stok (saham) perusahaannya kepada masyarakat umum melalui pasar saham, tetapi saham perusahaan ditawarkan, dimiliki dan diperdagangkan atau dibursakan secara swasta. Istilah yang kurang ambigu untuk perusahaan swasta adalah perusahaan tak tersebut dan perusahaan tak terdaftar.

Meski kurang mencuat daripada perusahaan umum, perusahaan swasta memiliki peran besar dalam ekonomi dunia. Menurut Forbes, pada 2008, 441 perusahaan swasta terbesar di Amerika Serikat menghasilkan pendapatan total sebesar $1,8 triliun dan mempekerjakan 6,2 juta orang. Tahun 2005, 339 perusahaan dalam survei perusahaan swasta AS Forbes menjual barang dan jasa senilai satu triliun dolar dan mempekerjakan 4 juta orang. Menurut Forbes, pada tahun 2004, ada 305 perusahaan swasta AS yang berpendapatan sedikitnya $1 miliar.[1]

Koch Industries, Bechtel, Cargill, Chrysler, PricewaterhouseCoopers, Pilot Travel Centers, Ernst & Young, Publix, Deloitte Touche Tohmatsu, Hearst Corporation, S. C. Johnson, dan Mars termasuk di antara perusahaan-perusahaan swasta terbesar di Amerika Serikat. Credit Suisse International (United Kingdom), IKEA, Jaguar Cars, J C Bamford Excavators (JCB), Land Rover, LEGO, Bosch dan Victorinox adalah contoh-contoh perusahaan swasta terbesar di Eropa.
