Kalevala

Kalevala – epinė poema, kurią XIX a. iš suomių folkloro sudarė Elijas Lionrotas. 1835 m. išleista pirmoji epo redakcija, kurią sudarė 32 runos ir apie 12000 eilučių. 1849 m. pasirodė antroji redakcija, sudaryta iš 50 runų ir apie 22000 eilučių.[1] Pavadinimas gali reikšti „Kalevo kraštas“[2] (sudarytas su suomiška priesaga – la/lä, reiškiančia vietą). 22 795 epo strofos suskirstytos į 50 giesmių. Epe atsispindi du pasauliai.

Veinemeinas

Užrašinėdamas runas, Lionrotas pastebėjo, kad jos klostosi į tam tikrus ciklus, todėl ir kilo mintis sukomponuoti ar galbūt atkurti vientisą liaudies epą. Pagal vieną paskaičiavimą, 3 % teksto parašė pats Lionrotas[3] – turbūt siekdamas padaryti kūrinį visiškai rišlų, sklandų.

„Kalevalą“ sudaro runų ciklai apie suomių ir karelų epo herojus, kurių protėvis buvo Kalevas, apie išmintingąjį Viainiamioineną, kalvį Ilmarineną, Kulervą ir kt.[1]

Epas išverstas į daugelį kalbų, taip pat ir lietuvių[1] (vert. Justinas Marcinkevičius).
