아이비 리그(영어: Ivy League)라는 명칭은 본래 미국 북동부에 위치한 8개 명문 대학을 지칭한다. 이 연맹의 이름은 이에 속하는 사립 명문 대학들의 학업적 명성이 최고치에 다다름에 따라 이들을 통틀어 가리키는 용어가 되었다.[1] 이 8개 명문 대학에는 하버드, 예일, 프린스턴, 펜실베이니아, 컬럼비아, 코넬, 다트머스, 브라운 대학교가 포함된다. "아이비 리그"라는 용어는 학문적 우수성, 까다로운 입학 조건, 사회 엘리트이론으로 함축된다. 아이비 리그는 "아주 오래된 8개 대학"("Ancient Eight")이라는 또 다른 애칭으로 부르기도 한다.

이 용어는 1954년 NCAA 디비전 1 운동 경기 연맹의 설립 이후에 공식화되었다.[2] 이 용어는 더 이상 운동 경기에만 국한되지 않으며 현재는 미국의 가장 오래된 학교들에 속하는 교육 철학을 대표한다.[3]
