園祥子（その さちこ、1867年12月23日（慶応3年11月28日） - 1947年（昭和22年）7月7日）は、明治天皇の側室。園基祥伯爵令嬢。宮中では小菊典侍（こぎくのてんじ）、夕顔局（ゆうがおのつぼね）と呼ばれた。

家系

父の園基祥（1833－1905）は、雅楽や神楽を家職とした公卿・園家の出で、万延元年（1860年）より睦仁親王(のちの明治天皇)の家司を務めていた[2]。実兄に細川利永の養嫡子となった細川利文。

また祖母である松浦季子の妹・中山愛子は明治天皇の外祖母である。

生涯

明治天皇の後宮において、柳原愛子典侍と並び寵愛あつい女官のひとり[1]。女官一の頓才（気が利く）でありながら気が軽く、それが森厳で荘重な明治天皇の気質と調和したとされる[1]。

明治天皇間に久宮静子内親王（夭折）・昭宮猷仁親王（夭折）・常宮昌子内親王（竹田宮恒久王妃）・周宮房子内親王（北白川宮成久王妃）・富美宮允子内親王（朝香宮鳩彦王妃）・満宮輝仁親王（夭折）・泰宮聡子内親王（東久邇宮稔彦王妃）・貞宮多喜子内親王（夭折）の2男6女を儲ける（うち成人したのは皇女4人のみ）。

30年以上にわたり高崎正風男爵の指導を受けて、毎日明治天皇から下される歌題を詠んでいるため[3]、祥子は歌道に秀でており、1912年（明治45年）の歌会始では「松上鶴」の勅題に対しての詠進が、選歌に入った[4]。

明治天皇の崩御後は貞明皇后の女官長となり、若君（後の三笠宮崇仁親王）の出産に立ち会った。従二位勲二等宝冠章を受ける。

源氏名について

夕顔局
当時、明治天皇のプライベートな居室には電灯、ガス灯、ランプは一切なかった[5]。代わって、季節に応じた照明（提灯、灯篭）を用いた[6]。秋に用いる夕顔灯籠は女官の手作りである[6]が、ある時、明治天皇が灯篭に近づいてみると、人の目・鼻の穴が開けてある滑稽な灯篭で、謹厳な天皇が思わず声を上げて笑った[7]。この夕顔灯篭の作り手が、祥子であり、以来、夕顔局と称されるようになった[7]。
