Þulur
Móðir raular þulur fyrir börn sín. Teikning eftir Mugg. Teikningin birtist á forsíðu ljóðabókarinnar Þulur eftir Theodóru Thoroddsen árið 1916.

Þulur eru ein gerð íslenskra þjóðkvæða, fleiri en sjö línur að lengd og ekki erindaskipt, sem hefur verið hluti af munnlegri hefð að minnsta kosti síðan á 15. öld. Merking orðsins „þula" hefur breyst í gegnum tíðina og virðist það fyrst hafa átt sérstaklega við kvæði sem tengdust nafnarunum eða annari upptalningu. Á 18. öld tíðkuðust svokallaðar langlokur sem voru langir rímaðir bragir þar sem ekki var skilið á milli erinda. Í seinni tíð hafa þulurnar orðið að barnagælum. [1]

Höfundar þulna eru yfirleitt óþekktir. Þó hafa ýmis seinni tíma skáld tekið ástfóstri við þuluformið og var ljóðskáldið Theodóra Thoroddsen (1863-1954) frá Kvennabrekku í Dölum þeirra langþekktust.

Þjóðlög við íslenskar þulur

Þulur voru yfirleitt mæltar fram eða raulaðar fyrr á öldum fyrir börn með einföldum laglínum.[2] Mörg þessara þjóðlaga hafa varðveist og þekkjast enn vel í dag. Þá útsetti tónskáldið Jórunn Viðar margar þessar laglínur og gaf út á prenti á ofanverðri 20. öld.
