Penghargaan Film Nasional ke-54, yang dipersembahkan oleh Direktorat Festival Film, sebuah organisasi yang dibentuk oleh Kementerian Informasi dan Penyiaran India untuk menentukan yang terbaik dari sinema India yang dirilis pada tahun 2006.[1][2]

Tiga komite dibuat dalam rangka menentukan berbagai entri untuk sesi film fitur, film non-fitur dan penulisan terbaik tentang sinema; dikepalai oleh sutradara pemenang penghargaan nasional, Buddhadeb Dasgupta, untuk sesi film fitur dan K. Bikram Singh bersama dengan Madhu Jain masing-masing untuk sesi film non-fitur dan sesi penulisan terbaik tentang sinema.

Penghargaan diumumkan oleh setiap ketua komite pada 10 Juni 2008 dan acaranya diadakan di Vigyan Bhavan, New Delhi pada 2 September 2008 dan penghargaan diberikan oleh Presiden India, Pratibha Patil.[3][4]
