Penghargaan Film Nasional ke-37, yang dipersembahkan oleh Direktorat Festival Film, sebuah organisasi yang dibentuk oleh Kementerian Informasi dan Penyiaran India untuk menentukan yang terbaik dari Sinema India yang dirilis pada tahun 1989.[1][2] Acara tersebut diadakan pada 1990 dan penghargaannya diberikan oleh Presiden India, R. Venkataraman.

Dimulai dengan Penghargaan Film Nasional ke-37, penghargaan baru dalam sesi film fitur diperkenalkan untuk Preservasi/Konservasi Lingkungan Hidup sebagai Penghargaan Film Nasional untuk Film Terbaik Tentang Konservasi/Preservasi Lingkungan Hidup dan diberi dengan Rajat Kamal (Teratai Perak) untuk produser dan sutradara dari film tersebut. Penghargaan baru lainnya diperkenalkan untuk Penghargaan Film Nasional untuk Film Non-Fitur Pertama Terbaik dari seorang Sutradara, namun tidak diberikan pada Penghargaan Film Nasional ke-37.

Selain itu, Penghargaan Film Nasional untuk Buku Terbaik tentang Sinema dipromosikan untuk Penghargaan Swarna Kamal (Teratai Emas).

Film fitur yang diberikan pada tingkat Seluruh India serta tingkat kewilayahan. Pada Penghargaan Film Nasional ke-37, sebuah film Bengali, Bagh Bahadur memenangkan Penghargaan Film Nasional untuk Film Fitur Terbaik sementara dua film Malayalam, Mathilukal dan Oru Vadakkan Veeragatha memenangkan jumlah penghargaan terbanyak (4).
