רוברט מנדל (באנגלית: Robert Mundell;‏ 24 באוקטובר 1932 - 3 באפריל 2021) היה כלכלן קנדי. זוכה פרס נובל לכלכלה לשנת 1999 "על הניתוח של מדיניות מוניטרית ופיסקלית תחת משטרים שונים של שער חליפין ועל הניתוח של אזורי מטבע אופטימליים". מנדל נחשב גם ל"אבי האירו", לאחר שעוד בשנות ה-60 הגה את הרעיון על מטבע אירופי אחיד. למרות זאת, כעשורים מאוחר יותר התנגד מנדל לאיחוד כלכלי מוחלט מדי בין מדינות האיחוד.

ביוגרפיה

מנדל נולד בשנת 1932 בקינגסטון שבפרובינציית אונטריו. את התואר הראשון בכלכלה למד מנדל באוניברסיטת קולומביה הבריטית בוונקובר ואת התואר השני סיים באוניברסיטת וושינגטון בסיאטל. הוא למד גם בבית הספר לכלכלה של לונדון ובמכון הטכנולוגי של מסצ'וסטס, שם סיים את הדוקטורט בשנת 1956. בשנים 1965–1972 לימד באוניברסיטת שיקגו. בשנת 1989 הוא מונה גם לפרופסור באוניברסיטת מקגיל. בתקופה זו ייעץ לגופים רבים ובהם האומות המאוחדות, הבנק העולמי, הנציבות האירופית, מועצת הנגידים של הפדרל ריזרב, מחלקת האוצר של ארצות הברית וממשלות רבות.

בשנת 1992 קיבל מנדל תואר דוקטור לשם כבוד מטעם הסורבון. בשנת 2002 קיבל מנדל את מסדר קנדה. בשנת 2006 קיבל מנדל תואר דוקטור לשם כבוד מאוניברסיטת ווטרלו. מנדל כיהן כפרופסור באוניברסיטת קולומביה ובאוניברסיטה הסינית בהונג קונג.

נפטר ב-3 באפריל 2021.
