Kantasuomi

Kantasuomi on historiallisen kielitieteen käsite, joka tarkoittaa historiallisen-vertailevan kielentutkimuksen avulla mallinnettua kantakieltä, joka jakautuu edelleen kolmeen kantakieleen:

Kieliä on puhuttu tutkija Petri Kallion mukaan karkeasti arvioiden niin, että varhaiskantasuomea on puhuttu toisella vuosituhannella ennen ajanlaskun alkua, keskikantasuomea ensimmäisellä vuosituhannella ennen ajanlaskun alkua ja myöhäiskantasuomea ensimmäisellä vuosituhannella ajanlaskun alun jälkeen.[2] Janne Saarikivi yhtyy Kallion mielipiteeseen.[3]
