Elmar

Elmar on mehenimi, mis on tarvitusel eelkõige Eestis, saksakeelsetes maades ja Aserbaidžaanis.

Eestis elas Rahvastikuregistri andmetel 9. mai 2012 seisuga 939 Elmari-nimelist inimest.[1]

Eestlastest on seda nime kandnud näiteks muusik Elmar Liitmaa, poliitik Elmar Lipping, keeleteadlane Elmar Muuk ja arhitekt Elmar Lohk, samuti Eestis sündinud Kanada arhitekt Elmar Tampõld, Saksamaal Euroopa Parlamendi liige Elmar Brok, vehkleja Elmar Borrmann ja näitleja Elmar Wepper, Austrias kunstnik Elmar Peintner, Aserbaidžaanis aga rahvusvaheline suurmeister males Elmar Magerramov, diplomaat Elmar Məmmədyarov, Gəncə linnapea Elmar Vəliyev, jalgpallur Elmar Baxşiyev jpt.

Sama nime kannavad ka mõned firmad, näiteks Aruba ainus elektriettevõte N. V. Elmar ning Eesti raadiojaam Raadio Elmar.

Eesti mehenimi pärineb tõenäoliselt saksa traditsioonist, kus see oli algselt lühend nimest Adelmar. Tõenäoliselt sarnaneb etümoloogia inglise mehenime Elmer omaga, mille keskaegne kuju Aylmer tulenes vanainglise sõnadest æþel ("õilis") ja mær ("kuulus").

1. jaanuari 2020 seisuga oli Eestis eesnimi Elmar 584 mehel. Elmar oli Eestis levikult 249. mehenimi. Kõige populaarsem oli eesnimi Elmar üle 85-aastaste vanuserühmas, kus neid on 10 000 elaniku kohta 27,08, ning Viljandi maakonnas, kus neid on 10 000 elaniku kohta 9,96. Elmar oli keskmiselt 67 aasta vanune (mediaanvanus oli 71).[2]
