In general, a person, organization or product added to a list should have a pre-existing article before being added to most lists. When to use
- The guideline on stand-alone lists identifies three common patterns used by editors to select entries for lists. Red links and non-notable subjects are not banned from lists by any policy or guideline. However, in many lists, especially lists with hundreds or thousands of potential entries, editors voluntarily limit the list to only notable entities, or even more tightly to those for which articles already exist. Use this message to explain to editors why their entry was removed from a restricted list.
- Do not remove red-linked or non-notable entries or use this template to warn users if the list in question is not limited to notable or blue-linked entries, e.g. the List of minor characters in Dilbert and many shorter lists. Editors are encouraged to clearly identify the list selection criteria in both the introduction to the list and on the list's talk page.
- Please refer to the index of message templates before using any template on user talk pages to warn a user. Applying the best template available for your purpose may help reduce confusion from the message you are sending.
