O.P. Jindal Global is a private deemed to be university[1] situated near Jagdishpur Village, Sonipat-Narela Road, Sonipat, Haryana, India. It was established in 2009 under Haryana Private Universities (Amendment) Ordinance, 2009.[4] The university has been named after Om Prakash Jindal, father of Naveen Jindal.[3] The university claims to offer 45 programmes in law, liberal arts, life sciences and business.[failed verification] O.P. Jindal Global University was among the 7 institutions recommended for the issue of LoI by the UGC, in its 542nd meeting.[5]
O.P. Jindal Global University (JGU) has been ranked among the top universities globally by the QS World University Rankings. It was placed in the 751–800 band in 2020, making it one of the youngest universities in the top 1000 at the time,[6] and improved to the 651–700 band in 2021.[7] In 2024, it was ranked in the 951–1000 band. JGU was also included in the QS Top 150 Under 50 Rankings in 2020 and 2021, reflecting its status as a recently established institution.[8] Despite such rankings, private universities in India, including JGU, have faced historical skepticism regarding their credibility compared to public institutions.[9]
The Jindal Global Law School (JGLS) was ranked India’s top law school in the QS World University Rankings by Subject in 2020 and 2021, and placed 76th globally among law schools in 2021.[10] In 2020, JGU was granted Institute of Eminence status by the Government of India.[11]
The university hosts active social service society,[12] legal aid clinic,[13] a Rotaract club,[14] and several cultural societies.[15] The university also hosts two annual festivals: cultural festival Biswamil[16] in the fall semester and sports festival Magnus[17][18] in the spring semester.
The university hosts a student-led legal aid clinic that provides legal counseling, awareness sessions, and assistance with public interest litigation (PIL). In 2017, the clinic received the Herbert Smith Freehills Community Engagement Award for its work, including efforts by students Shivkrit Rai and Nipun Arora to expose an admissions scam at the National School of Drama, Delhi.[20][21]
The clinic has been involved in notable legal actions, including a 2017 writ petition before the Allahabad High Court that resulted in the Sudheer Kumar v. State of U.P. decision, affirming that unaided private schools fall under the Right to Education Act.[22] It has also addressed issues such as police conduct during the CAA protests in 2019–2020 and made representations to the NHRC.[23]
The university’s student-run moot court society participates in national and international competitions. It has achieved success in events such as the Oxford Price Media Moot (2014),[24] the Philip C. Jessup International Moot India rounds (2015),[25] and the Willem C. Vis International Commercial Arbitration Moot, placing as runners-up in Vienna (2017) and reaching the world finals in Hong Kong (2019).[26] The society has also hosted competitions, including the Stetson International Environmental Moot Court and the Indian rounds of various moots.[27]
The Jindal Global Business School and Jindal School of Banking & Finance offers MBA degree in Digital Finance and Banking through a blended learning mode through their partnership with ed-tech startup upGrad.[28][29][30][31]
O.P. Jindal Global University offers a 1-year LL.M. programme in both residential and non-residential modes. However, as per the Bar Council of India (BCI) and the University Grants Commission (UGC), non-residential, Open and Distance Learning (ODL), or online programmes including LL.M., Engineering, and other professional degrees are not considered valid.[32][33][34][35]
