Μέγαρα Συρίας

Τα Μέγαρα ήταν αρχαία ελληνιστική πόλη στη Συρία, άγνωστης σήμερα θέσης.

Το όνομά της πιθανώς υποδεικνύει συμμετοχή Μεγαρέων αποικιστών κατά την ίδρυση της πόλης, υπάρχει όμως και η πιθανότητα να πρόκειται για εξελληνισμό του αραμαϊκού τοπωνυμίου Μααρά (Ma'ara), το οποίο συνηθίζεται στη βόρεια Συρία.[1].

Κατά τον Στράβωνα, τα Μέγαρα, μαζί με αρκετές άλλες πόλεις, μεταξύ των οποίων η Κασιανή, η Λάρισα και η Απολλωνία, ανήκαν στην Απάμεια του Αξιού (δηλ. του Ορόντη) και της απέδιδαν φόρους. Ο ίδιος αναφέρει πως η πόλη τροφοδοτούσε τον στρατηγό Διόδοτο Τρύφωνα, κατά τη διάρκεια της στάσης του εναντίον των Σελευκιδών, η οποία ξεκίνησε το 150 π.Χ.[1]

Σε συριακό τάφο στην πόλη Concordia της βορείου Ιταλίας, ο ερευνητής M. R. Dussaud διάβασε το επίγραμμα: Αυρήλιος Σάμμος και Φιρμίνος νεοφώτιστος Σύροι κώμης Μαγαραταρίχων ώρων Απαμέων ενθάδε κατάκιται. Δηλαδή το επίγραμμα αναφέρει την ύπαρξη χωριού Μαγαρατάριχα, κοντά στην Απάμεια το οποίο ίσως συνδέεται με τα Μέγαρα[1].
