Στην Αστρονομία ο όρος διάβαση αναφέρεται τόσο για πλανήτες όσο και για δορυφόρους.

  • Διάβαση Πλανήτη: καλείται η διέλευση ενός Πλανήτη από το φαινομενικό δίσκο του Ήλιου. Αποτελεί δε το φαινόμενο εκείνο που κινούμενος ο Πλανήτης γύρω από τον Ήλιο διέρχεται ακριβώς μεταξύ Γης και Ήλιου έτσι ώστε να προβάλλεται αυτός, σαν στρογγυλή μαύρη κηλίδα και να κινείται επί του δίσκου του Ήλιου.
  • Ανάλογο φαινόμενο συμβαίνει και στην κίνηση των Δορυφόρων. Διάβαση Δορυφόρου: καλείται η διέλευση ενός Δορυφόρου μπροστά από το φαινομενικό δίσκο του Πλανήτη του (περί τον οποίο περιστρέφεται) και της Γης.

Τέτοιες διαβάσεις είναι δυνατόν να προσδιορισθούν επακριβώς, ιδιαίτερα εκείνες των δορυφόρων του Διός και ιδίως προ του δίσκου του.

Σημείωση: Από τους Πλανήτες είναι κατανοητό ότι μόνο οι καλούμενοι «εσωτερικοί» δηλαδή ο Ερμής και η Αφροδίτη, που βρίσκονται πλησιέστερα της Γης και προς τον Ήλιο, υπόκεινται σε τέτοιες διαβάσεις, παρατηρήσιμες από τη Γη.

Η διάβαση της Αφροδίτης συγκέντρωνε ανέκαθεν το ενδιαφέρον των αστρονόμων, μιας και λόγω μεγέθους και μικρότερης απόστασης από τη Γη, είναι πιο εύκολα παρατηρήσιμη από τη Γη σε σχέση με εκείνη του Ερμή. Για την παρατήρηση της διέλευσης του 1761 και 1769 οργανώθηκαν ειδικές επιστημονικές αποστολές σε μακρινά μέρη του κόσμου (όπως στη Νότια Αμερική), μιας και η διέλευση θα μπορούσε να χρησιμοποιηθεί για την εξαγωγή σημαντικών συμπερασμάτων, μεταξύ άλλων για την ακριβή μέτρηση της αστρονομικής μονάδας.

Η κινητοποίηση αυτή δικαιολογείται επίσης και από το γεγονός ότι οι διαβάσεις της Αφροδίτης είναι σπάνια φαινόμενα: εμφανίζονται ανά δύο με χρονική μεταξύ τους απόσταση τα οχτώ χρόνια, ενώ τα ζευγάρια διαβάσεων απέχουν μεταξύ τους εναλλάξ 121,5 και 105,5 χρόνια. Ο συνολικός χρόνος για έναν πλήρη τέτοιο κύκλο είναι 243 χρόνια (που κατά σύμπτωση είναι και ο χρόνος σε μέρες του έτους της Αφροδίτης). Η τελευταία διέλευση της Αφροδίτης έγινε το 2012 και το επόμενο ζευγάρι θα γίνει το 2117 και το 2125.
