Kralj Kristijan I i kraljica Doroti od Danske započeli su kraljevsku dinastiju 1450. godine rođenjem svog prvog djeteta

Oldenburgovci su članovi najbrojnije i najznačajnije nekatoličke dinastije u Evropi. Potekli su sa sjevera Njemačke,[1] iz grofovije Oldenburg. Među današnjim Oldenburgovcima su kraljica Danske, kralj Norveške, kraljica Španije, bivši kralj i bivša kraljica Grčke, te princ od Velsa.

Oldenburgovci su postali kraljevska kuća kada je 1448. godine oldenburški grof Kristijan VI izabran za kralja Danske. Dvije godine kasnije izabran je za kralja Norveške, a sedam godina nakon preuzimanja norveške krune izabran je i za švedskog kralja. Dansku krunu od 1448. nose Oldenburgovci; Frederik, sin trenutne monarhinje, bit će prvi ne-Oldenburgovac na danskom prijestolju u posljednjih pet stoljeća, pošto njegov otac nije Oldenburgovac.

Godine 1762. i ponovo 1796. Oldenburgovci su zasjeli na carsko prijestolje Rusije, u vidu ogranka Holstein-Gottorp-Romanov. Zadržali su carsku krunu sve do Februarske revolucije 1917. godine.

Vilim, sin danskog kralja Kristijana IX, je 1863. izabran za kralja Grčke. Svi naredni kraljevi Grčke bili su Oldenburgovci.

Od 1448. do 1814. danski Oldenburgovci su držali i krunu Norveške. Godine 1814. predali su je švedskim Oldenburgovcima, iz ogranka Holstein-Gottorp. Nakon izumiranja ovog ogranka po dogovoru su švedsku i norvešku krunu naslijedili Bernadotti. Međutim, 1905. došlo je do okončanja personalne unije između Švedske i Norveške, a za novog kralja Norveške izabran je Oldenburgovac Karlo, sin budućeg danskog kralja Fridrika VIII.

Charles, princ od Velsa je također Oldenburgovac, kao i njegova braća, sestra i sinovi, budući da je njegov otac Filipos bio grčko-danski princ. Stoga će krune Ujedinjenog Kraljevstva, Kanade, Australije, Novog Zelanda, Jamajke i 11 ostalih zemalja Commonwealtha naslijediti Oldenburgovci.

Današnji poglavar kuće Oldenburg je Christoph Prinz zu Schleswig-Holstein, nasljednik vojvodstava Schleswig i Holstein.
