ভারত উপমহাদেশে সেই রাজা-বাদশাদের আমল থেকেই বিদেশী বণিকরা ব্যবসা বাণিজ্য করার জন্য আসতো। তারমধ্যে ব্রিটিশ, পর্তুগীজ ও আরব বণিকরা উল্লেখযোগ্য। তারা তাদের ব্যবসা বাণিজ্যের সুবিধার্থে এই ভারত উপমহাদেশে বিভিন্ন ধরনের দূর্গ নির্মাণ করত। তেমনি ফরিদগঞ্জ উপজেলার বর্তমান সাহেবগঞ্জ গ্রামে পর্তুগীজ বণিকরা একটি দুর্গ নির্মাণ করেছিল, যার নাম পর্তুগীজ দূর্গ। যা ইতিহাসের সাক্ষী হয়েও আজও দাড়িয়ে আছে।

ইতিহাস

পঞ্চাদশ শতকের সময় ফরিদগঞ্জ উপজেলাটি প্রায় সমুদ্রের কাছাকাছি হওয়ায় তখনকার বিদেশী বণিকরা ব্যবসা করার জন্য এই জায়গাটিকে বেশি পছন্দ করতেন। তেমনি পঞ্চাদশ শতকের সময় পর্তুগীজরা ব্যবসার জন্য ফরিদগঞ্জ উপজেলার এই সাহেবগঞ্জ গ্রামকে বেছে নিয়েছেন। এবং তাদের ব্যবসার সুবিধার্থে এখানে একটি দুর্গ নির্মাণ করেন। যার নাম পর্তুগীজ দুর্গ। তবে তারা এখানে এই দুর্গটি ব্যবসার উদ্দেশ্যে নির্মাণ করলেও এর পিছনে ছিল অন্য উদ্দেশ্য। পর্তুগীজরা মূলত ছিল জলদস্যু। তাই তারা তাদের এই জলদস্যুতার সুবিধার জন্যই এই দুর্গটি নির্মাণ করেন। [১] আর এই দুর্গটি নির্মাণের মূল উদ্যোক্তা হলেন পর্তুগীজ সেনাপতি এন্টেনিও ডি সিলভা মেনজিস। তিনি ১৫৪০ থেকে ৪৬ এর মধ্যে এই পর্তুগীজ দুর্গটি নির্মাণ করেন। [২]

দূর্গটির বিবরণ

ফরিদগঞ্জ উপজেলার সাহেবগঞ্জ গ্রামের এই পর্তুগীজ দুর্গটি ছিল বিশাল আকারের। এটি প্রায় দু'শত একর জমিতে নির্মাণ করা হয়েছিল। [১] সেনাবাহিনীর পর্যবেক্ষণের জন্য একটি টাওয়ার বানানো হয়েছিল। এখানে হাতিশালা ও সুড়ঙ্গপথও তৈরি করা হয়েছিল। [৩]

বর্তমান অবস্থা

বর্তমানে এই পর্তুগীজ দুর্গটি লতা-পাতা ও জঙ্গলে জরাজীর্ণ হয়ে রয়েছে। অযত্ন এবং অবহেলার কারণে এটি এখন প্রায় ধ্বংসের মুখে। [১]
